Psycho-Social Adaptation to the College Game: Players Start from Home. Now They're Yours, Coach.

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

SESSION OVERVIEW:
Session attendees will understand (1) an overview of psycho-social adaptation in college, (2)  the potential influence of parenting style on player development, (3) Self-Determination Theory of Motivation, (4) How previous authority style and motivation can interact.

The session will include a review of theory and research findings, and an experiential workshop.

Don't know if I'll have survey data from players at that point.  Regardless, I thought it might be instructive for all to use small groups (interaction is good) to

(1) describe traits and values of well- and poorly-adapted first year players,

(2) provide ratings of mothers and fathers across Authoritarian, Authoritative, and Permissive parenting styles for Hi- and Lo-Adapted players they have seen.

(3) Assuming we have enough attendees, provide 2 short role plays on dealing with (a) a recruit and parent(s), and (b) a first year player and parent(s).
