The role that today’s parents play in their child’s participation in sports continues to receive much scrutiny as stories of “problem” parents crossing the line are all too common in the news. However, most parents are positive sources of support for their children, even though it is the negative ones who receive more of the attention.

The role of parents in youth soccer is paradoxical — on one hand an area of concern, but on the other hand the active involvement of an educated and supportive parent is essential to a child’s continued participation and long term development. Recognizing this, US Youth Soccer has adopted the Athlete Development Model (ADM), which is viewed worldwide as a best-practice for cultivating young players. This presentation will discuss the changing role parents play in youth soccer as the child ages and suggest strategies for educating parents about the ADM with the ultimate goal of creating great athletes, not just great soccer players.
