SESSION OVERVIEW
Children with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) may be present with individual characteristics that have the potential to impact their participation and success in sports, particularly team sports. Occupational therapy helps children gain independence and promotes the development of sensory motor skills, visual and perceptual motor skills, and fine motor skills to enhance success in desired sports. Soccer is at the top of the list for many school age children. It is the goal of therapy to help develop the skills needed to interact with others and their environment, and be confident and happy as they pursue their love of the sport.

This 1-hour workshop will be an introduction to sensory processing disorder and how it relates to each aspect of team soccer. The presenters will outline a typical presentation of children with SPD on the field and the sidelines. They will describe and demonstrate applicable, hands-on strategies for the coaches, as well as strategies that coaches can provide to families for home practice.
